The Heritage of
Marie Thumas

Marie Thumas is Belgian history. It all started with vegetable preserves. Today, we take a different perspective: that of the freshly harvested vegetables. Just as tasty, even more astonishing.

An Iconic Brand

This first Belgian canning factory was established in 1886 by the Tournai engineer Edmond Thumas. The factory was located along the Leuven Canal in Wilsele. He named his company Marie Thumas” after his wife, Marie Durieux. Initially, only about twenty people worked there, but before World War II, during the summer, 600 women and 300 men were employed. In addition to processing vegetables, fruit and canned soup were also produced.
Quality Takes Priority
In the early years, everything was manual, but around the 1930s, Marie Thumas invested in automation. While the processing of vegetables remained partially manual, multifunctional machines also made their entrance. Quality always remained the highest priority, and only top-quality cans left the factory.
Marie Thumas is for Everyone
Remarkably, Marie Thumas was progressive even in those times. Alongside investments in machinery and automation, consideration was given to the well-being of the staff. A social house with amenities such as showers, changing rooms, and a cafeteria reflected a forward-thinking approach.
